Said to be one of the biggest tourist attracts in the world, the Perito Moreno glacier is located 80 kilometers to the west of El Calafate, by the provincial route #11 within the Glaciers National Park at lake Argentino.
The road passes by several country properties/ranches, and you can also see some stunning hills during the itinerary. But one of the most exciting places on the journey is certainly the Curve of the Sighs, from where you can have a front view of the glacier and its beautiful environment.
For finishing the tour, tourists usually spend hours observing the impressive mass of ice, 65 meters high, with floes floating around. It is such a majestic sight that most people feel overwhelmed standing at the balconies of the Perito Moreno glacier.
This trip can also be carried out embarked, approaching the glacier among the floes that split off from the big one, admiring the height of the ice walls from the level of the lake. An excellent navigation on the northern part is available on this kind of excursion; and it is also possible to do a so called ‘Mini-trekking’ which consists of an ice trek that lasts 3 hours over the extraordinary glacier.
El Calafate is called the capital of the glaciers due to its vicinity to the National park Los Glaciares that was created in 1937 and declared ‘World Patrimony of the Humanity’ by the United Nations in 1981. The Glaciers National Park embraces 450,000 hectares with 13 glaciers descending in the lakes Viedma and Argentino.
All are beautiful, but the one with the most extraordinary and imposing beauty is without doubts the above-mentioned Perito Moreno.
Once there, it is also worth visiting another the glaciers at Upsala, Onelli and Spegazzini, following the lagoon of the floes.
